MADE ON DEMAND

Micro-factories and on-demand production are removing the inventory that fashion has always over-produced.

INNOVATION

On-demand manufacturing inverts the traditional model. Instead of forecasting a season and producing against that forecast, a garment is cut, knitted or assembled after it is bought.

The enabling technologies are already industrial: whole-garment knitting machines that produce a finished piece with almost no cutting waste, digital printing that removes water-heavy dyeing steps, and automated cutting that works from a single-unit order.

The trade-off is speed and cost per unit. On-demand is currently strongest in knitwear, basics and personalised pieces, where the saving from unsold stock outweighs the slower production line.
